Giants U7s were almost as excited as the parents to take to the pitch today against Rylands. With almost all of the coaches kids isolating and a few others unavailable we were still able to put out a strong squad of 13 players. Organisation by the Wolves Foundation, a smart new O’Neills kit, the weather and pitch conditions were perfect.
Giants rotated 2 teams for 10 minutes each half. They immediately picked up where they left off in March in what was only their third ever game following their tight matches against Cadishead and Woolston pre-lockdown.
An defence full of enthusiasm and starting with a rousing ‘set, hit’ every tackle left little space for the opposition. Pitch size and impressive speed from the Ryland’s lads did though exploit space out wide to score some great individual tries. We’ll have to work on our drift! Giants replied with some impressive scores of their own, either through sheer power and determination or a sharp turn of pace. The coaching team are very proud of the attitude of every single player, some took knocks and cracked on, others encouraged and congratulated team mates and most importantly, all of them listened well, respected the refs and opposition and played with huge smiles for 40 mins. New players in their first ever games were particularly impressive. Special mention to Ava Eley for an amazing carry in the second half that saw her power through some would be tacklers and then just prior to going to ground produce a deft offload to Freddie Roberts who finished from 30 yards. Proud and happy coaches and parents were left looking forward to our next game ??
